For Day trip / D-Day tour from Paris
I recommend the morning train from St Lazare (7.07 am - But later on Sat and Sun) to Carentan. Return journey from Bayeux (6.41 pm train); Caen is no more a good option.
New interpretive center
American Cemetery, the ABMC did open in 2007 a new interpretive center, which is a lot better than Caen Memorial and FREE of charge.
